The artist
„Cellist Juris Teichmanis provides a smoulderingly erotic obligato” the English journal “The Gramophone” describes the playing of Juris Teichmanis. Originating from a Latvian family of musicians, he was born in Freiburg in 1966. After studies with Atis Teichmanis and Christoph Henkel in Freiburg, Martin Ostertag in Karlsruhe and master classes with Heinrich Schiff and Franco Rossi, he completed his education with Anner Bylsma in Amsterdam. Juris Teichmanis covers a wide range of repertoire from historical performance practice to contemporary literature. He is a well known soloist and chamber musician at the Kasseler Musiktage, the mdr-Musiksommer, the Dresdner Musikfestspiele, the Streicherfestival in Zürich, the Würzburger Bachtage, the Göttinger Händel-Festspiele, the Moscow Easter Festival, the Boswiler Sommer, the Arosa Music Festival, the Köthener Bachtage and the Bach Weeks at St. Michael’s Church in Hamburg.
Juris Teichmanis is chamber music partner of Hansjacob Staemmler, Muriel Cantoreggi, Michael Gees, Petra Müllejans, Julian Prégardien, Christine Rall and the Raschér Saxophone Quartet. He also works as a soloist with conductors such as Michael Schneider, Winfried Toll and Reinbert de Leeuw and has worked closely with Frieder Bernius for many years.
He has taught at the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie and the Landesjugendbarockorchester Baden-Württemberg.
Concert tours have taken him to Europe, the USA, South America, Japan, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
Juris Teichmanis is artistic director of the BACH PUR Festival in Freiburg.
